Data collection policies and methods

Identifying information

Depending on how a visitor uses our site, we may collect their personal data, including a first and last name, email address, phone number, and physical address.

Newsletter

We use a Wufoo form to collect the data visitors submit through our Newsletter Signup page. Visitors who opt-in to receive our newsletter provide an email address, as well as their first and last name. This data is used strictly for the purpose of adding the visitor to our list of newsletter subscribers. Please read the Wufoo Privacy Statement to learn more about Wufoo’s privacy practices.

We use MailChimp to send The Globe Online Newsletter to our list of subscribers. Subscriber data is saved on MailChimp servers and is processed by MailChimp in accordance with their privacy policy and terms. This data is used strictly for the purpose of sending our newsletter, and every email contains a link to unsubscribe.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. Please read the Automattic Privacy Policy for more information on Gravatar service privacy practices.

After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

Cookies

We use “cookies” on this site. A cookie is a piece of data stored on a site visitor’s hard drive to help us improve your access to our site and identify repeat visitors to our site.

If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Cookies can also enable us to track and target the interests of our users to enhance the experience on our site. Usage of a cookie is in no way linked to any personally identifiable information on our site.

Third party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to your website or other websites.

Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to your users based on their visit to your sites and/or other sites on the Internet.

Users may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Ads Settings.

Some of our business partners may use cookies on our site (for example, advertisers). However, we have no access to or control over these cookies.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics. Please read the Google Privacy Policy and the Google Analytics Terms of Service for more information on Google Analytics terms of use and privacy practices.

Sharing

We share aggregated demographic information with our partners and advertisers. This is not linked to any personal information that can identify any individual person.

Links

This website contains links to other sites. Please be aware that we are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of such other sites. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our site and to read the privacy statements of any other site that collects personally identifiable information.
